This week we talk about the most recognizable and influential genre in the entire industry! When people used to think ‘video games’ and ‘console sellers’, the first things that came to mind were mascots and platformers like Mario, Sonic and Crash Bandicoot. As the generations changed, mascot platformers began to decline whilst the mascots lived on. In recent years the platformer seems to be making a resurgence through remakes, re-releases and new projects which has us excited (bring back Jak and Daxter!!!). We dig deep into this, about what makes a mascot a mascot, sprinkle in some Nintendo shade and much more.
This week we run through the movie releases still due to hit for the fall/winter season of the year. With some blockbusters and award contenders still to come, 2019 is still going strong. What is looking like it will be a flop? What actually looks good? We run through all of this and also discuss the impact new streaming services from Disney and Apple will have on our moviegoing.
It’s no secret that the PS4 has handily ‘won’ this generations battle when it comes to exclusives, releasing blockbuster titles that have been scoring high with audiences and critics such as God of War and Spider-Man. In the background Microsoft has been making moves, building out their first party stable with studios such as Ninja Theory and Obsidian. It looks like Xbox is going to have a rich and varied portfolio of first party projects as we move into the next gen to rival Sony’s. We discuss all of this, what role Xbox Game Pass will play as well and try to avoid an all out console war.
Brace yourselves! This week, we get into the Batman movie franchise, starting from Batman 1989, and covering Batman Returns, Forever, Batman and Robin, The Dark Knight Trilogy and Batman vs Superman, with a dash of Georgio’s hate for the Justice League thrown in for good measure! We talk about each movie, what we like, what we dislike, we even defend Batman and Robin. Enjoy.
This week we discuss a genre of movie near and dear to our hearts, Kung Fu! Growing up, martial arts movies were personally some of the most influential, there was nothing more thrilling than watching the likes of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan on screen. We talk about what these movies mean to us, their influence on Hollywood action, and more! This turned out to be a bigger subject than anticipated, with part 2 to come! Enjoy.
As multiplayer games like Fallout 76 and Anthem, from traditionally single player focused developers, get released to lukewarm critical and fan reactions we ask ourselves, are single player games making a comeback? With God of War, RDR2 and Spiderman only releasing last year, there has always been a market for the huge AAA single player game but with studios like EA and Bethesda wanting to replicate the Fortnite / FIFA ultimate team monetisation model to increased groans from the community, it seems that the demand for games that don’t ask you to invest months and years of your time are on the rise. We unpack this and get philosophical once again as we come up with some (I think) great points of view I hope you will find hard to disagree with. Enjoy!
This week we sit down and discuss some of our favorite movie soundtracks and what they mean to us. Does a great soundtrack elevate an otherwise average movie? What about licensed soundtracks vs orchestral scores? We discuss all of this as well as some of the most famous soundtracks of all time in diverse genres. We even throw in some humming. Enjoy!
This week Georgio gives his impressions having completed Sekiro before we get into video game difficulty settings vs accessibility. Should all games be accessible to everyone? Should the artistic vision be compromised? We unpack all this and more!
This week we discuss the state of play going into the final season of Game of Thrones. We discuss what might happen, what we’d like to see happen and who we’d like to see make it out of the show alive. Full spoilers for seasons 1-7.
